Colour symbolism in HTTYD2
Something that was nagging at the back of my head while watching this film: did anyone notice how the ‘good’ alpha was white and the ‘bad’ one black? Why do we have to keep going back to the same old black and white issue when dealing with positives and negatives? Wouldn’t it have been much much cooler to have a say… Yellow good and green bad? Red good and lighter shade of red bad? Blue good and orange bad? I don’t know, the whole lot of the dragons are all awesomely colourful, and I think a lot of potential was lost on the boring old whitexblack solution. I mean it probably made some sense for the bad one to be darker, seeing as he had been basically constantly under the surface of the sea for who knows how long, so I suppose it would have some critters and seaweed and other stuff all over it, and his original colour could have been lost underneath some layers, ok, but why the white one? It could have been pink and it would hace been just as badass, because holy scales dis you see that thing??
And honestly I don’t even want to go down the racial issue line, because I think (and hope to all that is good) that race really wasn’t at the back of the creators’ minds when creating the baddies for this film. Toothless is black as night and he’s, I dare say, essentially the best loved and best enjoyed animated character since the first film came out
